Liquid Love is our desert island coffee - the bright and juicy cup you want to drink every day, maybe forever.

For us, these types of coffees usually come from our dear friends at Monkaaba in San Agustin, Huila. This tight knit group of multi-generational smallholders made the hard but purposeful decision to be their own masters in 2020. Their project centers around free and open access to information. something that is sadly still out of reach for marginalized members of the supply stream.

The current smallholder featured with this roast is Don Segundo Urbano. Scroll down for a deeper dive.

Our experience of this coffee is floral and citric, with a stone fruit character and syrupy sweetness.

Don Segundo Urbano

Smallholder Spotlight

Don Segundo spent his youth until the age of 35 travelling through different municipalities of Huila, working as a rice and cherry collector in farms. Upon his return to San Agustin, he inherited a small parcel of 4000 trees from his father where his story as a coffee grower began.

For the last 25 years, he has produced impeccable coffees but these have been destined largely for local cooperative structures that offer market prices and no connection to an external buyer. It was not until 2024 that Don Segundo, through the invitation of founding member Augusto Ortega, arrived at the door of Monkaaba and achieved the price his coffee received, as well as the recognition for its quality.

Cherries are collected every two weeks, and the cherries are left in to ferment in sealed bags for 20 hours before being depulped the next day. After de-pulping, the coffee mass undergoes a dry ferment of 24 hours in tiled tanks. The seeds are then rinsed and left to drain in bags for two hours before being moved to the solar dryer where they are dried for between 15 and 20 days.
